Akufo-Addo Blames NDC Executives for Post-Election Violence
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has accused executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of inciting violence following the announcement of John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the December 7 general elections.
Speaking on Sunday, December 22, 2024, during the Bicentenary Anniversary celebration of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, President Akufo-Addo expressed deep disappointment over the disturbances that marred the post-election period. He condemned the violent incidents, which included acts of hooliganism, vandalism, and attacks on public institutions.
“It is with deep concern that I acknowledge the unfortunate incidents of post-election hooliganism, vandalism, and violence that followed. Incidents which threaten to tarnish the beauty of our democratic exercise. Such acts were completely unnecessary and were wholly unacceptable. They must never reoccur,” the President remarked.
He alleged that some NDC executives and supporters were behind the disturbances, describing their actions as harmful to the country’s democratic image. “Regrettably, these unfortunate disturbances appear to involve some executives and sympathisers of the victorious party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). As a nation, we must be resolute in our commitment to safeguarding peace, stability, and democratic values,” he added.
Several government institutions, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Tema Oil Refinery, were reportedly targeted in the aftermath of the elections. The violence has drawn widespread criticism from various stakeholders.
President Akufo-Addo praised the Electoral Commission for conducting a free, fair, and transparent election. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the nation’s democratic principles over partisan interests.
With tensions still simmering, the President urged all Ghanaians to reject violence and come together to uphold peace and stability in the country. He called on political leaders to set a positive example and promote unity among citizens.
“This is the time to focus on building our democracy, not tearing it apart. Let us work together to ensure a brighter and peaceful future for Ghana,” he concluded.
