Chaos Erupts in Parliament as NDC, NPP MPs Clash Over Vetting Schedule
Tensions flared in Ghana’s Parliament as Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) clashed over the vetting schedule for the Ministers-designate for Health and Foreign Affairs.
The disagreement, which unfolded during the Appointments Committee session on Thursday, January 30, 2025, saw heated exchanges between the Minority and Majority members.
At the heart of the dispute was whether the vetting of Health Minister-designate Kwabena Akandoh and Foreign Affairs Minister-designate Okudzeto Ablakwa should proceed immediately or be postponed to Friday, January 31. While Minority MPs pushed for a delay, the Majority insisted that the process continue without interruption, leading to a standoff.
Efforts to restore calm proved futile as both sides refused to yield, causing the session to descend into chaos. Security personnel were placed on high alert to prevent any physical confrontations as tensions reached a boiling point.
With neither side willing to compromise, the deadlock remains unresolved, leaving the fate of the vetting process uncertain.
