K.T. Hammond Threatens Legal Action Against Captain Smart Over Alleged Defamatory Remarks
The Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, K.T. Hammond, has threatened to sue broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, over alleged defamatory tribal comments made during a broadcast.
This comes after the circulation of a viral video in which Captain Smart and a co-host allegedly attributed tribal remarks to K.T. Hammond. The comments reportedly implied that Hammond questioned how “an Ewe person” could occupy a parliamentary seat in Adansi Asokwa, a constituency in the Ashanti Region.
The allegations have ignited widespread public debate, prompting calls for clarification. K.T. Hammond has categorically denied making any such remarks and has demanded that Captain Smart issue a public retraction and apology to avoid legal action.
In a statement from Hammond’s legal team, the MP expressed distress and embarrassment over the allegations, describing them as both untrue and damaging. “The said statements that you attributed to our client were not only untrue but also amount to very serious libel on him and have caused him considerable distress and embarrassment. All the allegations made against him are false, and your attack on him was unjustified,” the statement read.
Hammond’s demands, conveyed through his lawyers, include:
- A full retraction and public apology.
- Compensation for the alleged defamation.
- Coverage of legal costs.
- A written undertaking to refrain from repeating such comments.
The legal notice concluded with a deadline for Captain Smart to respond, stating, “We look forward to hearing from you without delay. If we have not received a satisfactory reply by Wednesday, December 18, 2024, our instructions are to issue a Writ.”
As of now, the public awaits Captain Smart’s response to the demands, which could determine whether the matter proceeds to court.
