Afenyo-Markin Questions Funding Source for Mahama’s Anti-Corruption Committee

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has raised questions regarding the source of funding for a five-member anti-corruption committee recently established by President-elect John Mahama. The committee is tasked with investigating corruption cases from the outgoing Nana Akufo-Addo administration and forwarding findings to appropriate authorities for further action.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, December 18, Afenyo-Markin expressed concerns about the financial support required for the committee’s operations. He stressed the importance of transparency in identifying who is funding its activities.

“Is it private individuals funding the committee? If so, we need to know because this is about fighting corruption. If we don’t understand the source of funding, corruption could easily emerge within their own ranks,” Afenyo-Markin remarked. He added that if public funds are being used, the NPP would expect a clear explanation of how those resources are being allocated.

“Whose money are they going to use for fuel? Whose money will set up their office?” Afenyo-Markin questioned, indicating that the NPP intends to scrutinize the committee’s work.

The committee, chaired by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, was announced by Mahama on Tuesday as part of his broader efforts to address corruption and safeguard state resources. However, Afenyo-Markin’s comments suggest that the NPP sees potential for conflict if the committee’s funding lacks transparency.

He concluded by saying that the NPP would monitor the activities of the committee to ensure accountability in both its funding and its operations.
